A Little Prep Makes Painting Day Easy
When homeowners ask us how to get ready for an interior painting project, the honest answer is: not much — that’s what you’re hiring us for. But a few simple steps before the crew arrives make the project smoother, faster, and safer for your belongings.
What to Do Before We Arrive
Clear the Walls
Take down pictures, mirrors, clocks, and wall art. Set the hangers and nails aside if you plan to rehang things in the same spots — or leave them and we’ll work around your plan for the room.
Move the Small Stuff
Lamps, electronics, plants, breakables, and anything on shelves or dressers. Small items are the easiest things to misplace, so they’re best in your hands, not ours.
Give Us a Path
A clear route from the entry to the work area keeps drop cloths flat and traffic safe — especially on stairs.
Plan for Pets and Kids
Curious noses and wet paint don’t mix. A closed door or a day at grandma’s works wonders.
What You Can Leave to Us
- Moving and covering large furniture
- Drop cloths and plastic masking on floors, trim, and fixtures
- Removing outlet and switch plate covers
- Filling nail holes, caulking gaps, and sanding rough spots
- Daily cleanup and a full walkthrough at the end
One More Tip: Decide on Colors Early
The most common project delay isn’t prep — it’s color decisions. Pick your colors (and sheens) before the start date, and test a sample on the actual wall in daylight and lamplight. Not sure where to start? We help clients with color selection on nearly every job.

Interior Painting Prep FAQ
Do I need to move furniture before painters arrive?
Move small and fragile items yourself; a good crew moves and covers larger furniture as part of the job.
Should I remove outlet covers and curtains?
You can, but a professional crew handles covers, hardware, and masking as standard prep. Taking down curtains and wall art is the most helpful step.
Can I stay home during interior painting?
Yes. Modern low-VOC paints have minimal odor, and we work room by room so your household can function around the project.
