Preparation Makes the Difference
In Michigan, the difference between an exterior paint job that lasts 3 years and one that lasts 10 comes down to one thing: preparation. Our harsh winters, humid summers, and constant freeze-thaw cycles demand that every surface is properly prepped before paint goes on.
Step 1: Power Washing
Dirt, mildew, and chalky paint residue must be removed before new paint can bond properly. Professional power washing at the right pressure cleans the surface without damaging siding or trim.
Step 2: Scraping and Sanding
Any peeling, cracking, or flaking paint needs to be scraped down to a solid surface. We then sand the edges smooth so the new paint feathers seamlessly into the existing finish.
Step 3: Caulking and Sealing
Gaps around windows, doors, trim joints, and siding seams let moisture in. We caulk every gap with high-quality, paintable caulk — this is one of the most important steps for Michigan homes.
Step 4: Priming Bare Spots
Any bare wood or patched areas need a coat of primer before topcoat. Skipping this step is the #1 reason paint peels prematurely.
Step 5: Choosing the Right Time
In Michigan, the ideal exterior painting window is late April through October. Paint needs temperatures above 50°F and low humidity to cure properly. Early morning dew and late-season rain can cause problems if timing isn’t right.
