Protect Your Deck from Michigan’s Harsh Weather
A deck is one of the most exposed surfaces on your property. Michigan’s freeze-thaw cycles, summer UV, rain, and snow can destroy an unprotected deck in just a few seasons. Here’s everything you need to know about painting and staining your deck.
Paint vs. Stain: Which Is Better for Michigan Decks?
Solid Stain
Our top recommendation for most Michigan decks. Solid stain penetrates the wood while providing full color coverage. It handles moisture and temperature swings better than paint and won’t peel like film-forming coatings.
Semi-Transparent Stain
If you want to see the wood grain, semi-transparent stain is beautiful — but it requires reapplication every 2-3 years in Michigan. Best for newer decks with attractive wood.
Paint
Deck paint creates a solid, opaque film. It hides imperfections well but is more prone to peeling on horizontal surfaces that collect moisture. We recommend it for deck railings and trim, not deck floors.
When to Paint/Stain Your Deck in Michigan
The ideal window is late May through September. You need:
- Temperatures between 50-85°F
- No rain for 24-48 hours after application
- Low humidity
- Dry wood (moisture meter reading below 15%)
The Prep Process
- Power wash to remove dirt, mildew, and old finish
- Apply wood brightener to restore natural pH
- Let dry for 48-72 hours
- Sand any rough spots or splinters
- Apply stain/paint with brush and roller for best penetration
How Long Will It Last?
- Solid stain: 4-6 years
- Semi-transparent stain: 2-3 years
- Paint: 3-5 years (with proper prep)
