Michigan Weather Sets the Schedule
Exterior paint is chemistry, and chemistry cares about temperature and moisture. In Metro Detroit that gives us a real painting season — roughly mid-May through early October — and homeowners who plan around it get paint jobs that last years longer.
The Rules That Actually Matter
Temperature
Most premium acrylic paints want surface temperatures between 50 and 85 degrees. Below that, paint does not coalesce into a tough film; above it — or in direct summer sun on a dark wall — it dries too fast and can flash or lap. We chase the shade around the house on hot July days for exactly this reason.
Moisture
Siding needs to be dry going in, and the finish needs roughly 24 rain-free hours after application. Morning dew counts too: in spring and fall we often start later in the morning so surfaces can dry off.
Overnight Lows
A warm afternoon does not help if the temperature crashes after sunset while the paint is still curing. This is what shuts the season down in late October, not the daytime highs.
Season by Season in Metro Detroit
- Spring (May–June): Excellent. Mild temps and long days. Book early — everyone has the same idea.
- Summer (July–August): Prime time. We manage sun exposure and heat, but production is at its best.
- Early Fall (September–early October): Often the nicest painting weather of the year — warm, dry, and stable. The last reliable window before winter.
- Late Fall through Winter: Exterior season is over; this is when we do interiors, cabinets, and trim.
Why Late Summer Booking Makes Sense
If your siding is showing chalking, cracking, or peeling now, an August or September start means the repair goes on this year instead of waiting through another freeze-thaw winter — which always makes the prep bill bigger, not smaller. Our residential painting calendar for the remaining good-weather weeks fills quickly.

Exterior Painting Season FAQ
What months are best for exterior painting in Michigan?
Mid-May through early October in Metro Detroit. Paint bonds and cures best between 50 and 85 degrees with moderate humidity and no rain for 24 hours.
Can you paint a house exterior in Michigan in the fall?
Yes, into early October most years. Modern acrylics can be applied down to about 35–50 degrees depending on the product, but shorter days and cold nights slow curing.
Is it too late in the season to book an exterior painter?
August and September are still excellent painting months, but calendars fill fast — booking in late summer usually secures one of the last good-weather slots of the season.
