The Cheapest Square Footage in Your House
Metro Detroit homes almost all have basements, and most of them are half-finished spaces waiting to be useful. Paint is the fastest, least expensive way to turn “storage with a couch” into a rec room, home office, or gym — if you use the right products in the right places.
Below Grade Is a Different Environment
Fix Water First
Paint is a finish, not a waterproofing system. Efflorescence (white mineral bloom), damp corners, or seasonal seepage need to be corrected before any paint goes on — otherwise you’re repainting next year over bubbled film.
Use Mildew-Resistant Products
Basements run more humid than upstairs. We use premium mildew-resistant acrylics and the right primer for each surface — bare block, previously painted masonry, and drywall each want something different.
The Sprayed Ceiling Trick
The most popular basement finish we do: spraying the exposed joists, ductwork, and pipes all one color — usually a deep charcoal or a clean white. It costs far less than a drywall ceiling, keeps plumbing and wiring accessible, adds apparent height, and instantly gives the space an intentional, industrial-loft look.
Colors That Fight the Cave
- Warm whites and light warm neutrals on walls make the most of limited natural light
- Dark sprayed ceiling + light walls is the signature modern basement combination
- Avoid cool grays below grade — with no sunlight to warm them, they go cold and gloomy
- Semi-gloss on stair trim and handrails for durability where hands actually go
Floors Too
Concrete floors take epoxy or specialized concrete coatings well and pull the whole space together. Ask us about it when we quote the walls — doing them in one project saves mobilization cost.
