Aluminum Siding vs. Vinyl Siding Painting — What’s the Difference?

If you’re choosing between aluminum and vinyl siding for a Metro Detroit home — or thinking about painting one or the other — the differences matter a lot. Aluminum and vinyl look similar from the curb but behave very differently when it comes to repainting, longevity, repair, and resale value.

Aluminum siding vs. vinyl siding at a glance

The dark color rule

This is the biggest practical difference between painting aluminum and painting vinyl: aluminum can take any color; vinyl cannot. Painting vinyl siding a darker color than its original shade can cause heat absorption that warps and buckles the panels permanently. Sherwin-Williams VinylSafe and Benjamin Moore Aura Vinyl Renu both restrict you to colors with an LRV (light reflectance value) at or above the original. Aluminum has no such limit — go from beige to navy if you want.

How to tell which siding you have

Tap a panel — aluminum sounds metallic and a little hollow, vinyl sounds like plastic. Look at the seams: aluminum panels lock with metal-on-metal hooks, vinyl uses overlap with nail slots that allow movement. Pull a corner: vinyl flexes, aluminum dents.

Which is the better candidate for paint?

Both are good candidates if they’re structurally sound. Aluminum gives you more color flexibility and slightly longer paint lifespan. Vinyl is cheaper to paint but more constrained on colors. If you’re choosing between repainting and replacing, paint wins on cost almost every time for either material — provided the panels themselves are intact.

Mixed-material homes

Lots of Metro Detroit homes have a mix: aluminum on the main siding, vinyl shake accents, or aluminum gables with vinyl on the body. We paint both with the right product per material in the same job — no need to replace either.
