Aluminum is one of the better surfaces to repaint when it’s prepped properly. The metal holds paint exceptionally well — better than vinyl, in our experience — but only if the chalk, oxidation, and any loose flaking are dealt with before the first coat goes on. Skip that and the new paint peels off the chalk layer, not the panel.

A real aluminum siding job looks like this:

• Pressure wash with a mild detergent at 1,500–2,500 PSI to strip chalk and dirt
• Scrape any loose flaking paint and feather the edges
• Sand chalky panels with fine-grit pads
• Spot-prime bare metal with a metal-bonding primer
• Mask windows, doors, gutters, and fixtures
• Two coats of 100% acrylic latex

That’s the difference between a job that lasts and a job that fails. Most of the cost is in the prep, not the paint.

An average 1,800 sq ft ranch with chalky siding lands around $3,200–$4,400. Two-story colonials in West Bloomfield, Birmingham, and similar areas tend to run $4,800–$6,500.
